Position Overview:
The WHSP Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection and preparation of blood and other specimens for clinical and research testing, ensuring accuracy, safety, and an exceptional patient experience. As an integral part of a multidisciplinary team in a women-focused and elite athlete healthcare environment, this position supports a wide range of health, sports performance, and scientific initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures on patients of all ages with professionalism, compassion, and precision.
Collect blood samples for both clinical diagnostics and research studies, following all protocol-specific procedures.
Identify patients according to policy using two approved identifiers.
Monitor individuals during and after blood collection to ensure comfort, safety, and adequate blood flow; observe for and respond appropriately to adverse reactions.
Select and prepare appropriate collection tubes, containers, labels, and documentation for each specimen.
Maintain knowledge of test requirements, including special handling, temperature control, light sensitivity, and other specific collection criteria for clinical and research tests.
Prepare specimens for transport to reference laboratories, ensuring chain-of-custody and timely processing.
Communicate clearly and professionally with providers, research staff, and team members regarding specimen needs and collection procedures.
Accurately enter data into the electronic health record (EHR) and/or research databases as required.
Uphold infection control and safety standards in compliance with OSHA and institutional protocols.
Maintain phlebotomy supplies and ensure equipment is clean, organized, and functional.
Support general clinic flow and contribute to a welcoming, supportive patient experience.
Participate in quality improvement and continuing education relevant to phlebotomy, women’s health, and athlete monitoring.
Maintain strict adherence to HIPAA rules and regulations as well as any confidentiality or non-dislosure agreements to protect patient privacy and insitutional data integrity.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
National phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent) preferred.
Current BLS certification.
At least one year of phlebotomy experience preferred; experience in a clinical and/or research setting is a plus.
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Demonstrated empathy, patience, and professionalism in high-stress or emotionally sensitive situations.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Comfortable working with athletes of all life stages, including pediatric and geriatric, as well as athletes of all tiers from recreational to elite.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
Work Environment:
Frequent standing and walking; ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Dynamic clinical setting with a strong emphasis on innovation, collaboration, and research.
Must be able to perform repetitive tasks with dominant hand throughout the day.
