Catherine Gardiner, MD

Dr. Catherine Gardiner is an internal medicine-trained sports medicine physician dedicated to helping active women move, train, and compete at their best. She specializes in the non-operative management of musculoskeletal injuries, with a particular focus on midlife health and exercise optimization.

Dr. Gardiner earned her undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where she was a four-year student-athlete on the women's open rowing team. She went on to complete her medical degree at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed her residency training in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School with an emphasis on outpatient medicine, and practiced for several years as a general internist before pursuing fellowship training. She completed her sports medicine fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, where she treated both adult and pediatric athletes in a range of settings, including at the Boston Ballet, NCAA athletics, and coverage of high school sports.

Dr. Gardiner is passionate about using evidence-based methods to create an individualized approach to care for patients across the lifespan of activity. She is particularly interested in supporting women through life's biggest transitions, including peri- and postpartum recovery and perimenopause. She is skilled in diagnostic and therapeutic musculoskeletal ultrasound, as well as orthobiologic procedures such as platelet-rich plasma injections and extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

Dr. Gardiner is active in research, with particular interests in female athlete health through the lifespan, sex differences in recovery from concussion and the growing role of artificial intelligence in medicine and sports.
